More than a little “wet behind the ears”, Andy learns a bittersweet lesson about life when he meets Lucy (Amy Irving, Academy Award Nominee), the girl of his dreams at the racetrack one day. Ashamed of his occupation, Andy leads Lucy to believe he’s wealthy.

Soon one deception leads to another, until there is no way to tell Lucy the truth. The irony of the story is that Lucy and Andy have fallen deeply in love. As Andy dejectedly admits on his way out of town, all is lost because “I’M A FOOL.”

Set in 1797 at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars, Damn the Defiant! (also known as H.M.S. Defiant) is an enthralling British naval drama made to capitalize on MGM’s epic remake of Mutiny on the Bounty, also released in 1962. It’s based on Frank Tilsey’s novel Mutiny and stars Alex Guinness as a fair-minded captain locked in psychological conflict with his manipulative, coldly malicious first officer (Dirk Bogarde), and the parallels with the famous true story are clear. However, there were many naval mutinies during this period, and this large-scale saga, which includes some spectacularly staged widescreen naval battles, offers a realistic depiction of life in the British navy at the time–from the press gangs and floggings to the appalling food and living conditions.

Director Lewis Gilbert–who previously helmed Sink the Bismarck! (1960)–strikes a good balance between the personal drama and sweeping maritime adventure. Guinness successfully varies his firm-but-fair officer from The Bridge on the River Kwai, Bogarde is chillingly hateful, and Anthony Quayle gives strong support. –Gary S. Dalkin

Philip Kaufman’s intimate epic about the Mercury astronauts (based on Tom Wolfe’s book) was one of the most ambitious and spectacularly exciting movies of the 1980s. By all rights, the film should have been every bit the success that Apollo 13 would later become; The Right Stuff is not only just as thrilling, but it is also a bigger and better movie. Combining history (both established and revisionist), grand mythmaking (and myth puncturing), adventure, melodrama, behind-the-scenes dish, spectacular visuals, and a down-to-earth sense of humor, The Right Stuff chronicles NASA’s efforts to put a man in orbit. Such an achievement would be the first step toward President Kennedy’s goal of reaching the moon, and, perhaps most important of all, would win a crucial public relations/morale victory over the Soviets, who had delivered a stunning blow to American pride by launching Sputnik, the first satellite. The movie contrasts the daring feats of the unsung test pilots–one of whom, Chuck Yeager, embodied more than anyone else the skill and spirit of Wolfe’s title–against the heavily publicized (and sanitized) accomplishments of the Mercury astronauts. Through no fault of their own, the spacemen became prisoners of the heroic images the government created for them in order to capture the public’s imagination. A great star and a great composer can make a Broadway musical into a smash, as Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin proved with Call Me Madam. Not a bad place to start with a movie, either, and the 1953 film of the show has both Merman and Berlin represented in brassy fashion. Granted, Merman’s platinum-throated talents were best suited to the stage, and the production overall has that dutiful, stodgy tone of so many Fox musicals. Extra points for the suavity of George Sanders (he’s Merman’s love interest in tiny Lichtenburg, where the lady has been appointed U.S. ambassador), and for the dancing of Vera-Ellen and Donald O’Connor. A year after crashing through the wall in Singin’ in the Rain, O’Connor has a similar solo athletic workout to “What Chance Have I with Love.” High point: Merman and O’Connor trading verses on “You’re Just in Love,” the best tune in a bouncy score. –Robert Horton

In The Big White, a failing Alaskan travel agent hopes he’s found the answer to his problems when a couple of thugs leave a dead body in a dumpster outside his business. Unfortunately, the thugs who dumped the body in the first place (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and W. Earl Brown, Deadwood) want it back, so they kidnap Barnell’s wife (Holly Hunter, Raising Arizona), who may or may not have Tourette’s Syndrome. Meanwhile, an obsessive insurance agent (Giovanni Ribisi, Saving Private Ryan) smells something fishy and thinks he’s found the case that will get him and his phone psychic girlfriend (Alison Lohman, White Oleander) transferred to warmer climes, and Barnell’s long-missing brother (Woody Harrelson, White Men Can’t Jump) returns, a bit perturbed to learn he’s dead. The Big White suffers from an overload of quirkiness–phone psychics, Tourette’s, and possibly gay hit men are a lot of whimsy for one movie–but the actors commit themselves to their roles with gusto. The movie misses the bullseye that Fargo hit, but fans of macabre comedy may enjoy The Big White. –Bret Fetzer
